Resolution Deterioration of Scanning Transmission Electron Microscope in a Windowed Gas Cell

초록	Commercially available windowed gas cells for in situ scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) opened vast possibilities to study gas-solid interactions with high-spatial resolution. Modern gas cell designs comprise efforts to maintain the high-spatial resolution of the primary electron beam by reducing SiN window and gas thickness. Despite these efforts, the primary electron beam still interacts with the pre-sample gas atmosphere and SiN window, which leads to the deterioration of the initial spatial resolution of the primary electron beam and degrades the STEM image quality. In the presented work, we aim to understand the STEM resolution deterioration mechanisms by utilizing Monte Carlo simulations to reveal information on electron scattering in the SiN window and pre-sample gas atmosphere. Additionally, we use the derived understanding of the STEM resolution deterioration mechanisms to propose measures to avoid STEM resolution deterioration in in situ gas cell STEM experiments. Monte Carlo simulations reveal that the STEM resolution limiting factor in the gas cell is an insufficient signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). By increasing the SNR in the acquired STEM images, the resolution in the STEM images is improved. The proposed approach is demonstrated on a WS2 specimen imaged under 0 and 1000 mbar Ar gas pressure.

Investigation of freeze–thaw deterioration effects on electrical properties and electric-heating capability of CNT-CF incorporated cement mortar

초록	The present study investigates the impact of freeze–thaw deterioration on the electrical properties and electric-heating capabilities of cement mortar incorporating with carbon nanotubes (CNT) and carbon fibers (CF). Mortar samples, containing 0.5 wt.% CNT and 0.1 wt.% CF relative to the mass of cement, were prepared and subjected to freeze–thaw tests for up to 300 cycles. The electrical properties and electric-heating capability were evaluated every 30 freeze–thaw cycles, and the physicochemical characteristics of the samples were analyzed using X-ray diffraction and mercury intrusion porosimetry. The results indicate a decline in both electrical conductivity and heat-generation capability as the freeze–thaw cycles progress. Furthermore, changes in the pore structure of the mortar samples during the freeze–thaw cycles contributed to damage in the conductive network formed by CNT and CF, resulting in decreased electrical conductivity and heat-generation capabilities of the mortar samples. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Korean Carbon Society 2024.

초록	The present study explored the alterations in the reaction properties of Portland cement (PC) against coupled deteriorations of magnesium and sulfate upon carbonation curing. The physical and chemical features of the samples containing MgSO4 at levels of 0, 1, 5, or 10 wt% were evaluated under the 10% carbonation curing condition for 27 days. The test results provided in this study signified that the incorporated MgSO4 reduced the reaction of clinkers, thereby reducing the compressive strength development of the samples, still the strength was vastly enhanced by the carbonation curing. The carbonation curing resulted in the presence of carbonated minerals and Ca-modified silica gel, regardless of MgSO4 content. However, a sufficient supply of sulfate ions induced the excessive formation of gypsum and lowered the CO2 uptake levels after carbonation curing. These outcomes are anticipated to serve as fundamental information with regard to the integrity of carbonation curing of PC with CO2 gas contaminated with magnesium and sulfate which would closely be influential to the safety of the final products.

Self-supervised Predictive Coding with Multimodal Fusion for Patient Deterioration Prediction in Fine-Grained Time Resolution

초록	Accurate time prediction of patients' critical events is crucial in urgent scenarios where timely decision-making is important. Though many studies have proposed automatic prediction methods using Electronic Health Records (EHR), their coarse-grained time resolutions limit their practical usage in urgent environments such as the emergency department (ED) and intensive care unit (ICU). Therefore, in this study, we propose an hourly prediction method based on self-supervised predictive coding and multi-modal fusion for two critical tasks: mortality and vasopressor need prediction. Through extensive experiments, we prove significant performance gains from both multi-modal fusion and selfsupervised predictive regularization, most notably in far-future prediction, which becomes especially important in practice. Our uni-modal/bi-modal/bi-modal selfsupervision scored 0.846/0.877/0.897 (0.824/0.855/0.886) and 0.817/0.820/0.858 (0.807/0.81/0.855) with mortality (far-future mortality) and with vasopressor need (far-future vasopressor need) prediction data in AUROC, respectively.
